Care of extremely premature babies is very resource-intensive and staff and parents are often faced with difficult ethical decisions. The methods used in the care of very premature babies are usually evaluated on older children. This means that there is no definite evidence for what care is best for the child, both before and after birth.
The study is expected to have major significance for care of extremely premature babies. We will gain knowledge of the illness and problems that affect premature babies, not only as newborns, but also during their childhood years and into adulthood. This knowledge is important because the goal is to improve the health of premature babies throughout their lives.
